Lifetime Achievement Award

December 2007

The Lifetime Achievement Award is given for exceptional service to the industry. Exceptional means out of the ordinary and the lifetime element also means exactly that, the award is for senior people.

It is their sustained contribution over many years that is being recognised and that contribution should be widely acknowledged across the industry.

Previous winners of this award have included Brian Davis, when he was chief executive of Nationwide Building Society; Ken Culley, formerly chief executive of Portman Building Society; George White, chairman of Bank of Scotland Mortgages; John Goodfellow, chief executive of Skipton Building Society; John Windeler, former chairman of Alliance & Leicester; and last year’s winner Andrew Messenger, formerly chief executive of West Bromwich Building Society.

The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Philip Williamson, who retired in March of this year as chief executive of Nationwide Building Society.

Philip has contributed so much to the financial services industry and is a highly respected champion of the building society movement. He has been an active campaigner for consumers, fighting causes such as free cash machines and credit card charges. Philip has expanded Nationwide with extra staff, branch network refurbishments, opening new call centres and the Society is continually high in the Sunday Times list of companies to work for. Nationwide is now, following the recent merger with Portman Building Society, the second largest mortgage lender in the UK, and the natural leader of the building society world.

Philip’s early career was with Lloyds Bank and property group UK Land before joining Nationwide in 1991 to head up the commercial lending area of the business. He became a director in 1996 and was chief executive for five years.

Philip is currently Chairman of Investors in People, President of the European Mortgage Federation and Past Chairman of both the Building Societies Association and the Council of Mortgage Lenders.

He is a keen sports fan, being a proficient golfer and a big supporter of Liverpool Football Club, the town of his birth. Philip was also, of course, an enthusiastic supporter of Nationwide’s involvement in football.

Philip is no stranger to the MFG Awards as he won the Ambassador Award in 2005.
